Last Minutes Holiday Cards

If you never got around to the family photo shoot this year, or if life has been catching up with you the last few weeks and you haven’t done your holiday cards yet, consider these creative, fast, easy (and in several cases, photo-free) holiday cards that still have that expensive looking customization and style you can be proud to send to family and friends.

Custom Elegance without the Photo
If you’d like to send a card of distinction, try this holiday card by Lynda Angelastro. It’s called “Flourish Tree Card” and is a 5 x 7 Greeting Card, template 74599. Your family names become part of the text and flourish “tree.” Easily done, the card is a high-end looking, fast and easy alternative to the family photo card.

Christmas Penguins
Another card that can be photo free is this fun and clever card “From the Four of Us,” also by Lynda Angelastro. It’s a 6 x 4 greeting card, template 72632, which shows four penguins on the both the front and the inside. Change the number of penguins and the “FOUR” on the card to fit your family size. The card does have a slot for a family photo on the inside, but it’s easily removed if you’d rather go photo free this year.

Simple One-Photo Cards
For fast and simple holiday greetings, try our 4 x 8 photo cards. Only the front surface is printable, which allows you to write a personal message on the blank back if you’d like to. Here are two high-style, but exceptionally easy-to-make, family photo cards from Jill Means. Add your family name at the bottom and swap your photo for Jill’s and the “Simple Snowflake” photo card, template 66546, will be ready in less than five minutes! And how’s this for an idea to get around the family photo dilemma? Use a photo of the baby, the dog or the house in place of the traditional every-one-in-the-family photo. No one is going to complain if they get a photo of the littlest family member. They’ll grin if they get one of the dog and they’ll think back nostalgically if they receive one of the house.

Cards that Give All Year Long
Continuing on with the 4 x 8 photo cards, here are a couple of brand new ideas from Lynda Angelastro, using a single photo. These cards come with a twist. They are designed to be enjoyed and appreciated all year long. The first one shown here is “Calendar Card 1” a 4 x 8 photo card, template 74486. The second 4 x 8 photo card is “Calendar Card 2,” template 74615. Either can be sent from an individual or from the entire family, simply swap out the photo and change the wording from “friend” to “friends” or vice versa. What other holiday greeting could encourage your family and friends to keep and enjoy their card all year long?

Check out our Club HM Facebook page and you’ll see project after project to inspire and instruct you. On a recent “Holiday Décor” challenge, Club HM members were treated to four challenge winners’ projects, each designed to dress up your home for the holidays.


Photo Cube Decor
Kimberly Keber drew lots of “likes” in our recent “Holiday Décor” challenge with her innovative use of her “Photo Cube Template” 8.5 x 11 scrap page, template 67387. Inside the oversize vase shown above, Kim placed several assembled photo cubes along with small Christmas ornaments and a swirl of holiday garland. The sparkly outside bow is tied with a silver snowflake. Because the photo cubes are simply photos, Kim is able to change her vase’s décor with the seasons by substituting seasonal décor inside the vase and a new ribbon on the outside. To keep her display interesting, Kimberly tosses her cubes, every now and then (much like a salad) to give new glimpses of the photos on the cubes.


Putting Faith at the Heart of Your Home
Cassie Balser wanted to decorate her home by focusing her family on the true meaning of Christmas. She made a set of “Savior Blocks,” template 74061, after seeing a similar style set of “Family Blocks” from Heidi Arave. Made on a 14 x 11 poster, Cassie’s blocks are mounted on sections of 1 x 3 lumber and placed on another length of 2 x 4 wood that acts as a stand. Step-by-step instructions are included in the sure-to-be-appreciated template.



A Block for All Seasons
Winner Corrine Simonsen decided that the blocks she used for her winter holiday décor should work for other holiday seasons as well. She designed her blocks to fit on 4 x 4 wooden post material cut into cubes. With six surfaces on each block, she made template 69061, “Seasonal Blocks” from three 12 x 12 scrap pages that spell out “Spooky” for Halloween, “Jingle” for Christmas, “Chilly” for winter generally, “Flower” for spring, “Family” for holidays like Father’s and Mother’s Day or anytime in between and “Thanks” for the Thanksgiving holiday.


Block Bonanza
Michelle Bell had seen Heidi Arave’s “Halloween Countdown Blocks” and got quite carried away with our “Holiday Décor” challenge. Shown here is her challenge entry “Fun Countdown Blocks” a 12 x 12 scrap page, template 74049. Club HM Facebook members loved it, and so did Michelle. Soon an entire page of posts came up with other versions of her new blocks. The Facebook crowds went wild and we talked Michelle into submitting all versions to the Template Gallery.


Soon Michelle posted a set of “Blue and Green Countdown Blocks,” now template 74047 and again fans let her know with their “likes” just how much they loved the new design.

The saga continued with Michelle next posting a set of "Red and Blue Countdown Blocks," template 74050. By this time, this Creative Team alumni was telling Facebook fans how excited she was about the sets of two 4 x 4 wood blocks sitting on a 2 x 4 base that she was creating and everyone was admiring the beautifully designed templates.

Once Michelle was ready to submit to the Template Gallery, she had added another couple of block sets including the “Red and Green Countdown Blocks,” template 74048 and the “Gingerbread Countdown Blocks,” template 74046, shown here. There may be more we’ve missed. Search the Template Gallery for “countdown” and see what you find!

Fun Halloween Idea

Want to be the room mother with the most at your child’s Halloween school party, hand out something special at trick or treating time or make favors for a Halloween party? Try trick or treat favor boxes from Creative Team member Michelle Wolfley. They’re called “Spooky Halloween Party Favor Boxes,” 68460, and “Monster Halloween Party Favor Boxes,” 68457, and are both made from 12 x 12 scrap pages.

1. Personalize the name on the template. Use your child’s name for school treats or your family name for treats to be handed out at your door or at “trunk or treat” events.

2. Make any design changes you desire, remembering to duplicate any changes on all four boxes.

3. Calculate the number of boxes you need. Divide by four and have that number of pages printed.

4. When printed pages arrive, cut out each box carefully.

5. Fold each of the triangles upward to form a pyramid out of each box.

6. Punch out black circles at tips of triangles.

7. Fill with candy of your choice.

8. Thread ribbon through each punched hole.

9. Bringing points of triangles together, tie ribbon into a bow.

Once a year we release a bumper crop of collections in conjunction with Reunion, our annual consultant conference. This year, 25 collections were added.





If your plans this year include a yearbook or a year of pages to commemorate your family’s previous twelve months, you’ll be thrilled to see that the four remaining “365 Days With You” collections: “365 With You September, “365 With You October,” “365 With You November” and “365 With You December” are part of our large release.





As one small part in supporting the service men and women of our country, Heritage Makers also released four military themed collections. “American Heroes Air Force,” The “American Heroes Army,” "American Heroes Marines” and “American Heroes Navy” collections were placed in our Basic Art to maximize their use by military families. Many military templates made from this art are already in the Template Gallery and Heritage Makers has appealed to those interested in designing for military personnel and their loved ones to submit templates using Basic Art ONLY.





For celebrations and dated events of all kinds, check out four collections that help tell the story with style. “A Boy's Perfect Birthday Add-on” and “A Girl's Perfect Birthday Add-on” are wonderful collections that bring a touch of festivity to any page or project. “And A Happy New Year” contains party worthy pieces, including dates to document your New Year’s Eve celebrations clear until 2013. And for calendars that are clean and high style, nothing beats the “2012 Calendar” collection from Jill Means.



Many children are enrolled in gymnastics and tumbling classes and our new “Got Chalk” collection was designed just for them. But don’t pass this collection by if you are documenting winners in other sports. Gold, silver and bronze trophies along with 1st, 2nd and 3rd place ribbons can celebrate any sporting accomplishments. Studio Tips

I loved these tips from the HM blog so wanted to post here as well. Enjoy!

1) Use the right size book for the right size photos. Multiple 4×6 or 5×7 photos at full size do not usually fit inside an 8×8 book.

2) When using buttons, fit to appropriate size. Coat buttons are 1 inch across. Shirt buttons are a half inch and baby buttons are a quarter of an inch. Check element size in the LAYOUT tab and a ruler.

3) Turn rulers on to check alignment, equal size borders etc. Turn them off for an overall design feel.

4) Alphabets are easier to find if you place only one number, one lower case, one upper case in your MY FAVORITES folder.

5) We see the finished book in spreads. Go to the VIEW/PRINT PREVIEW. Faster easier, more reliable.

6) A well designed page should work upside down or sideways. Flip things, and change them up to make a spread.

7) Change the size of elements that drop on the page at equal size. In nature, little is identical in size or rotation.

Overlap elements to make natural design groupings but make sure enough of each element shows to preserve its identity.

Fun Patriotic idea for this month

Make it in Moments

Create a splash of patriotic color on your family table this summer with Judy Maddux’s template 34153, “4th July” or Lynda Angelastro’s “Canadian Coasters” template 60323. Inexpensive 4-inch or 4 ½ inch tiles from the home improvement store form the base of these colorful coasters.
Here’s how:

1.     Personalize the coasters if desired or just have the 12 x 12 scrap page printed as is. Request UV coating at check out to help protect the finished coasters from drips.

2.     Cut the 12 x 12 scrap page into nine 4-inch squares as indicated.

3.     Glue trimmed squares to tiles with tacky white glue, spray adhesive or a glue stick.

4.     Add clear, self adhesive, dimensional cabinet “bumpers” to four corners of tile underside. You can also use craft store felt squares cut to four inches square or round raised felt “bumpers” designed to mute noise of cabinet doors slamming or to go on bottom of furniture.

5.     For stronger waterproof protection (if you’re going to bring the same tiles out every year for instance) coat top of tile with urethane varnish.

6.     Allow to dry overnight.

Oh my gosh!!! I just have to share my good news. I just found out that I won a contest that I entered on Abbeyroo!! I got to submit an idea for a work of art and have it dedicated to me. I can't wait to see what she does with my idea. hehe I am NOT going to tell you, you will just have to wait and see. I will for sure post it when it is done so you all can see it!! I am sooooooooo excited!!!

Mother's Day Blocks

I made these blocks for Mother's Day, but couldn't post them until after I had given them to my family. I used a template from the template gallery designed by Heidi Arave for a 12x12 page and each page makes 6 blocks. The blocks cut from a 2x4 and are 5 inches each. I painted some red and some tan and put glitter on the middle of the flower and used spray adhesive and modge podge. You could put a bow or add anything to make them your own. I think they turned out really cute and had to share!

I would like to share an amazing artist that I recently met. She is one of the sweetest people ever and I fell in love with her style and her work. Her name is Amber and her shop is called Abbey Roo!! I got the most beautiful watercolor Sweet Lily painting from her and couldn’t be more pleased. I love her use of color and you can see her spunky personality in her art. I thought it would be fun to do an interview with my new friend.

Q: Share some back ground on your life as an artist:
I've actually been drawing ever since I can remember. I fell in love with art at a very early age and I can seriously remember sitting in my room for hours creating. I went through some pretty traumatic things as a child and drawing was a way for me to cope with my feelings without having to say a word. I loved being able to escape through art and create worlds!

Q: What motivates your art?

Nature. Animals. People. Colors. Vintage. Pretty things. Friends. Life.

Q: Tell us about your shop:

I just opened my shop Abbey Roo a few weeks ago. It's something I've been thinking about for a long time, and with gentle encouragement from some very dear friends, I was brave enough to take the leap! I am very excited and have a lot of plans for what I want to do. My head is constantly spinning with ideas and sometimes it's hard because I want to do it all at once. Since I work full time I have to take a step back and pace myself.

Q: Tell us something unique about yourself:

I can do an amazing goat impression. My husband is so proud he makes me show it off to his friends. :) I do sometimes get shy doing it when put on the spot so if I have to do my goat, I usually make him do something in return. :)

Board Books are being discontinued :(

I have some sad news to share today. The board books are being discontinued. They are 8x8 size with 32 pages (non-expandable). Board books are perfect for babies and young kids because they have the thicker pages and are designed to be sturdy.

So... if you have wanted to do a board book- NOW is the time. There are some adorable board books in the template gallery and you can simply add your own pictures and be done in a short amount of time. Due to ongoing difficulties and associated costs with manufacturing the board book, we will be discontinuing this product. To ensure that clients have the opportunity to publish a board book project they may have been planning, we have established the following schedule:
1) Users will be able to download board book templates and start new projects until April 30, 2011.
2) Board books can be ordered through June 30, 2011. Projects completed on or before June 30th will be available for viewing indefinitely to allow users to recreate their projects in a different book format.

It’s Heritage Makers Craft Time!

Come see what it means to create a heritage home and learn how easy it is. I don’t want to just tell you about Heritage Makers storybooking and décor projects; I want you to come enjoy a time to create and learn of new project ideas. I’ll have all the materials you’ll need; all you have to do is show up, ready for some fun.

This month we will be doing Thanksgiving and Christmas tiles using 12x12 scrapbook pages. These make great home decor and great gift ideas for the holidays.

You can do full 12x12 tiles for $7.00 and/or a set of 4 small 6x6 tiles for $8.00. All supplies are included in the cost. I will place a group order on November 1st so we get the scrapbook pages in time.

Something New and Sweet about Heritage Makers

“Best of Heritage” is one of the awards given at the HM annual conference. This project is about a family and their baby, who had a birth defect that would not allow him to live very long. There is an organization called “Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep” that consists of over 7000 photographers that volunteer their time to visit during the precious time after these infants are born. They photograph the endearing moments that Mom, Dad, siblings and family members spend with their little one.

Heritage Makers is partnering with NILMDTS and will be donating a book featuring these photos to each family that the photographers serve. As a consultant, there is an oppurtunity to volunteer and can help these families design their books. Heritage Makers offers a wonderful product and process, and for me, a consultant, a wonderful opportunity to do what I love and help others.

New Conversion from Credits to Points

By now you should have noticed that all of your credits have been transferred to publishing points. This is such exciting news! Now you can create any kind of HM project you want, with no hassle!

A couple of things to note with the new points system. All points come from the retail price. If you purchased an 8x8 book for $39.95, you would actually receive 49.95 points.
Here's an example.

Here's how to access your points:
1. Go to My Studio.
2. Accept the terms and conditions (You'll only have to do this the first time you log in with the new system.)
3. Click My Account.
4. Click Publishing Points.

At this point, you should be able to see a list of all your available points, their expiration date, how many you have used, and how many points you have remaining.

Please note: We have lowered the retail price on three of the most popular storybooks.
11.5x8.5 storybooks were $69.95 and are now $59.95
12x12 storybooks were $79.96 and are now $69.96
13x11 Legacy storybooks were $124.95 and are now $99.95

You'll notice the new retail price reflected in your points if you had credits for any of these products.
The points system is very exciting and will make selling and using Heritage Makers products so much easier!

*Another important note - Products now have a 2year expiration and are now noted from that time of purchase! No more logging in to extend those credits!

I love decorating for the holidays at my house. Especially when I can create my own decorations! This was a simple and easy project. Create 12x12 page with 5 designs per page. I used modge podge and glued on painted wood block.

Create your own scrapbook page with family pictures to display in your home as well. This is an 8 1/2 x 11 page. You can frame then, mount on tiles or put up on the refrigerator for all to see.

Also make your own invitations for parties and events. Don't forget that Heritage Makers has a variety of products to use for all occasions.
